My name is Nathan, and I am a website developer. In a general sense, I build custom websites for local businesses. While I was in college, all my business marketing courses emphasized the importance of having an online presence. Whether a brick-and-mortar location, or an e-commerce store, it is essential that every business needs a website. By the time I graduated, I had built my first website for my dad. Him and I ran (and still run) the family business Brett’s Home Services. At the time, our local window and carpet cleaning business was doing pretty well, but desperately needed a website to help monetize our marketing efforts. As we hired more employees, we also needed an affordable way to draw in a consistent stream of customers.

In all honesty, my initial website was pretty lame. Like many other janky websites, it included our company’s contact info, services, about us info, and a FAQs page. Even with the appropriate content, our website was not getting the traffic I expected. More importantly, our family business was not getting a crazy amount of client bookings I expected.

As it turns out, I was missing the key ingredients to a working website. As I continued to learn, the reoccurring issue I ran into was the fact that a stand-alone website does not remain effective without maintenance.
